Alexandra's Golden Sesquicentennial
Alexandra was created on a gold field. To celebrate our beautiful town's birthday we ask you wear something gold, a lame frock, a gold tie, gold ribbons, gold shoes or even a gold ring to celebrate Alexandra's 150 glorious years of being.
Gold was discovered near a red gate separating two runs so the town was first known as Redgate . A year or two later, in 1867, it was renamed Alexandra, after Princess Alexandra, wife of future, British King Edward 7 th . The first race meeting was conducted about the same time and has been a legendary part of the life of the town ever since.
